All of the constraints that I felt were shattered after going to Europe. Thoughts and ideas that I had kept to myself .The curtain fell away as all of those crazy beautiful thoughts and ideas somehow became validated as art through all of those creative conversations with judges and other artists and then medaling helped me realize that I was good and had much to offer and more to learn. My world exploded!
Free to love abstract and all it had to offer. Art entirely about color, space, feeling and with all of these achieving balance. FREEDOM!
Hawaii opened a completely new color palette for me, learning about island life and the very strong pull of the ocean as the tide ebbed in and then out . The senses in Hawaii are so very touchable, where smell combines with sight and hearing! You need all of these to paint the oceans of Hawaii.
All of this helped me to learn the art of blending acrylics do what I was feeling, seeing, smelling and hearing.
The rhythm of Life
The rhythm of color
The rhythm of music
The cycle of life
The cycle of the moon
The continuity of the elements, water - air - earth - fire, all in the cycle, the ebb and the flow of life - color - music - words all playing together, forces that we channel through art.
My early years in art started out in clay while living in the Southwest. I still love the smell and the feel of the clay, just the smell of clay can bring back the images of my past art projects.
The number one lesson that I had learned was the understanding of what was meant by “knowing the clay”. It is that moment when you know exactly what the clay will do and yes, what it won’t do! Building sculptures that many thought were not possible,” knowing the clay”, combining the clay with other elements, copper, glass and oh so many more,
Living in the desert southwest was clay. It was the color, texture and the feel of gritty sand. The discovery of the very old and the very new in clay are not far apart.
Then always the thought of the vibrant color and what medium is best suited to complete this thought.
As time goes by my husband and I have traveled to most of the states in the US. Mailboxes have become a fascination for me and I have started painting the different boxes for each state. All of the boxes are unique and tell a story about the people and show the character of each state. These paintings become a part of my “Americana Series”.
The above paintings are my way of documenting the fading American Icons, mailboxes.
Just a few images from my sketch book:
